What is placenta encapsulation?
Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the placenta in capsule form for ingestion by the mother. The placenta is the organ which connects mother and baby in the womb, and it contains many beneficial vitamins, minerals, hormones, proteins, stem cells, and other nutrients that help new mothers to have an easier postpartum recovery. The capsules are completely tasteless, and are similar in size and appearance to an herbal supplement.
Almost all mammalian mothers consume their placenta shortly after birth. Some of the reasons moms choose to encapsulate are:
♥ To ward off “baby blues” and postpartum depression by balancing the hormones.
♥ To increase breast milk production.
♥ To speed healing time.
♥ To boost maternal energy levels.
♥ To replenish iron and other nutrients lost through childbirth.
How is placenta encapsulation done?
Placenta encapsulation takes approximately 2 days from start to finish. I pick up the placenta as soon as possible after the baby’s birth, preferably within a few hours. Proper precautions are taken to ensure cleanliness and prevent contamination during all steps of the process. I begin by rinsing the placenta and examining it for completeness and anatomical variations. I thinly slice the placenta, then dehydrate it until completely dry. Then, I grind it into a fine powder which is placed into capsules.
Raw vs. Steamed
There are two main methods of preparing the placenta prior to dehydration: raw and steamed. I offer both methods, but strongly encourage raw method. The available evidence suggests that the benefits of placenta capsules are greater using the raw method, and there is also a higher number of capsules produced. According to tradition, raw capsules are considered better for those with a history of depression, while steamed is better for those with insomnia, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. For those who feel strongly that they prefer steamed/TCM method, I can offer it for an additional $25 processing fee.
