Postpartum Sealing Ceremony

What is a postpartum sealing ceremony?

Also called “closing the bones”, a postpartum sealing ceremony is a beautiful way to mark the transition into motherhood. In fact, this is considered essential postpartum care in many cultures. Birth is a process of opening to allow new life to enter the world. The shift from pregnancy to postpartum is sudden and dramatic, without a moment of pause to catch your breath and integrate this transformative experience. It’s no wonder that many new moms find themselves feeling raw and vulnerable. A postpartum sealing ceremony provides closure to the intense openness of the birth experience, on a physical, psychological, and spiritual level. It can take place anytime during the first 40 days after birth.

What happens during the ceremony?

The ceremony takes approximately 3 hours to complete. You have the option to customize it however you like. The usual structure of the ceremony goes something like this:

Ceremonial bath / yoni steam
Depositphotos_5446265_original – I will draw a bath for you with healing herbs and minerals to replenish and soothe the body. Another option is a yoni steam, a traditional vaginal steam treatment using the same types of herbs. This warming energy is beneficial for postpartum recovery, and spending time in the water allows you to reconnect with the watery energy of the womb. It can be an opportunity for some alone time, or for a “rebirthing” ceremony with your baby if there was anything disappointing about your original birth experience. As you emerge from your bath, hold the intention that you are being reborn, new and fully integrated.

Moxibustion – Moxibustion is a technique used in Chinese medicine and acupuncture to bring healing warmth to the body. A stick of moxa (Chinese mugwort) is lit and brought close to the skin over your womb and sacrum to provide heat, which is then massaged inward to be absorbed by the body.

Massage – Massage is a wonderful way to pamper yourself and honor the incredible strength it took to carry your child into the world. Massage during the postpartum period helps with relaxation, improves circulation, reduces swelling, and relieves aches and pains. It can also help with postpartum mood disorders and increase breastfeeding success.

Tucking In and Blessings – Following birth, the body and its energy centers remain open until consciously closed. “Tucking in” or “closing the bones” is a way to ritually seal the body and attain closure from the birth experience. I will wrap your body with ceremonial cloths at the ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, and head to close the major energy centers of the body. I use sage and rose water to clear away negativity, then balance your chakras with Reiki energy therapy.

Binding helps you regain your pre-pregnancy shape faster, speeds the healing process by gently assisting your muscles and organs back into place, aids the elimination of uterine discharge, and helps you maintain proper posture while breastfeeding and babywearing. This is the perfect way to close the ceremony and provide long lasting effects.

It is recommended to do the full ceremony five times during the first 14-40 days.
